Google Wave the Communication hub

Google’s looking for nothing but challenge the email as we know it for years. A pretty lofty ambitious goals for their newer  product.

Why you should care about Wave?

Google has a good track record at successful products launched in established markets. Look at Gmail launched against Microsoft Hotmail and Yahoo Mail with now more that 150 million users. It’s Open Source; the code is open for improvements and such as you can create your own Wave server. Take a look at the Wave Developer blog with an interesting Wave API preview.

The load of features can turn off users who aren’t early adopters. It aim to be a Project Management system built on a real-time communication system, including Instant Messaging with shared conversations, drag and drop files.

If you think about it, it’s about becoming a communication hub for users. To compete to be the communication hub that Facebook is becoming.

If you’re not one of the first lucky users who gets an invitation, get your invitation. Lifehacker also did a pretty neat and complete Wave first look post. Please comment your thoughts :)

I see this as an offensive on Facebook more than Hotmail and Yahoo.

When I mentioned Google Wave to my roommate, he asked me if I think Google Wave will kill or replace anybody. I didn’t think it would at first because I thought of Facebook/Twitter et al but after a few seconds I figured that the ones that should be hit most in the long term is Microsoft Outlook and Yahoo/Hotmail.

Especially now that Yahoo and Hotmail are trying to integrate social media to their e-mail “profiles” and kind of go back to the portal days.

With Google Wave being Open Source, I wouldn’t be surprised for Facebook and Twitter to be integrated very quickly, easily and seamlessly.

I do believe Google Wave will revolutionize Internet Communication.

I do think it will revolutionize Internet communication too.. we will see in the coming months how the early adopters get used to it. Exciting times giving the fact that younger do not have this relationship with email and have often more communication touch point, IM, email, FB, Twitter, etc… :)

      nice comment, thanks!
